Buying advice 1.4 i-vtec 59 onwards I'm contemplating purchasing a facelifted Honda Civic and am torn between the two petrol engines, 1.4 and the 1.8. First question is, the 1.4 in the facelifted version is an improvement over the old 1.4? If so in what way? In real life terms, not stats

You have the high performance systems like on the R, with 2 power-stages at intake en exhaust valves. At higher revs "sharper" cams become active, so the valves are longer and deeper opened, resulting in better engine breathing and more power. There used to be a system with VTEC on intake
With the exception of the forthcoming Type R, the 1.8 is currently the fastest model in the Civic range, with a 0-62mph time of 9.1 seconds and a 134mph top speed. Its official economy figure of 46.3mpg is remarkably realistic, and we achieved an average around the 44mpg mark during our testing. CO2 emissions of 145 g/km place it in VED Band F
